Action of the 6th Fleet in 1986 against Gaddafi, UnUsed........(sold) - - - - partial History of the Gulf of Sidra Action in 1986 In the spring of 1986, the US Navy deployed aircraft carrier groups into the Mediterranean Sea, specifically the disputed Gulf of Sidra. Libya claimed that the entire Gulf is their territory, 32 degrees, 30 minutes north with an exclusive 62 nautical miles (115 km) fishing zone[2], Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi asserted this in 1973 and dubbed it The Line of Death. The United States claimed its rights to conduct naval operations on international waters, a standard of 12-mile territorial limit from a country's shore.

                        | A3D-1 Operation Redwing, Project 5.8 The 5.8 project was to determine the response of the structure of the Douglas A3D-1 aircraft to the Thermal effects of a Thermonuclear Explosion. The overall project was called "Project 58", that patch is almost identical to this one except for the "58" versus this patch which has a decimal point "5.8". From limited research the overall boss for Operation Redwing was "HQS JOINT TASK FORCE SEVEN" (circa 1955-56) I have found no reference that the 3 x "A3D-1" aircraft, rushed to be finished by Douglas, were called Skywarriors, anyone know about these A-3D-1s? The rush to finish these A3D-1s was so the Navy would have a "dog-in-the-fight" against the Air Force's B-52 Nuclear delivery capability. One of the A3D-1s was lost in a crash; another was damaged beyond field-repair; the 3rd made it through the tests. ( Much of this information was gained through the assistance of an A-3D Association member who still had his Project 58 patch = many Thanks! )

McDonnell Douglas & General Dynamics A-12 factory patch, circa 1984-88, older plastic backing over cheesecloth, UnUsed.....(sold)
21st Century A-12 Medium Attack, UnUsed.......inquire In 1984 the Navy began a program to replace its aging fleet of A-6s with Stealth Technology.   In January 1988 General Dynamics and McDonnell Douglas Aerospace Corporation received the contract for the development phase of the program. DOD envisioned that once the A-12 was developed the USAF would develop a version of the plane, an Advanced Tactical Aircraft to replace the F/B-111s and F-15Es.  The A-12 Avenger II design never reached production and was cancelled in 1991

If this is not a correct ID for the patch - send the correct ID and History
Probably dates from 1948 to 1958 for a Navy rating patch for an Electronic Technician(ET) with the Helium Atom symbol below the "ET" From the late-1940's into the early-1960's the ET rating worked on anything electronic including guided missiles (An early joke was that "ET" stood for "Everything Technical") With more specialized systems coming online new Navy rates were established and took over the more esoteric roles
