probable partial History of the 187th Infantry Regiment
Constituted November 12, 1942 as a Glider Infantry Regiment with 2 Battalions; Activated February 25, 1943 as part of the 11th ABD
By the end of WWII the Regiment had been trained in Gliders and as Parachutists
In May of 1945, after heavy fighting retaking the Philippines, the 187th GIR expanded with a 3rd Battalion and Redesignated as a Para-Glider Infantry Regiment (PGI)
( at the same time the 188th and 674th were Redesignated Parachute Regiments )
The 187th PGI was sent to Japan as part of the 11th ABD and assigned Occupation duties; there it received it's name of "Rakkasans"

(In 1948 a New Insignia for the Regiment was authorized, this design was later used as the patch for the 187th ARCT--see above on 3508CR Ashtray)
In April 1949 the 187th returned to CONUS as part of the 11th ABD and was stationed at Camp Campbell, Kentucky
On June 30, 1949 it was Redesignated the 187th Airborne Infantry Regiment (AIR)
On August 1, 1950 the 187th AIR was Redesignated the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team (ARCT) and received supporting units
It Redeployed immediately to Japan arriving on September 20, 1950
The 187th participated in the Inchon landing and helped retake Seoul and the Kimpo Peninsula in September1950
Before Redeploying back to Japan it made two successful Combat Parachute Assaults in Korea
It arrived back in Japan on June 26, 1951; Redeployed on May 24, 1952 to the Island of Koje-do, Korea to suppress a POW Riot
It returned to Japan on October 18, 1952; Returning to Korea June 22, 1953
The 187th ARCT returned to CONUS in July 1955 to join the newly ReActivated 101ST ABD at Fort Campbell, KY

2 5/16" wide, older looking Tab, been on a wooden plaque or etc. as it has splinters of wood glued to the back

The arc is the same as the top of a 2nd INF BDE airborne patch but hangs over 1/8" on each side of the 2nd SSI
Arc fits well on a WWII "Airborne Command" red patch but hangs over 1/8"
almost fits the arc of a 13th ABD patch
Will not fit a USAAF basic ssi...arc is wrong

Raiders Platoon, D Company, 2nd Battalion,
501st Parachute Infantry Regiment

In September 1967 Delta Company was formed, from mostly non-Infantry men, to round-out the 2nd Battalion when the 101st ABD was notified for deployment to Vietnam.
The name "Raiders" was adopted after men from Delta were accused of "raiding" other units for equiptment/gear which they could not procure through normal channels.
Delta's Insignia was designed during Christmas of 1967 while they were at Cu Chi, RVN.
Delta went to Vietnam in December 1967 with 168 men; by April 1968 only 16 Original members of the Company were still present for duty.

partial History of the Air Assault(Airmobile) Badge

NOTE: There are conflicting dates on when the following actions took place so be prepared for arguments.  I presented the information, you fight it out with your buddy.

The 101st ABD had been ReDesignated 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile) in 1968 while serving in Vietnam
The Airmobile Badge (shown above) was Designed circa 1971 by an Officer in the 101st while serving in Vietnam
This Badge was approved for local wear within the 101st Airborne Division April 1, 1974
Also on April 1, 1974 the 3rd Brigade's jump status was terminated (this BDE was madeup of many Veterans of the 173rd ABN BDE after it stood-down
ReDesignated 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) October 4, 1974.
The Air Assault Badge(formerly known as the "Airmobile Badge") was approved January 18, 1978 for Army-wide wear by individuals who successfully completed Air Assault training after 1 April 1974.

some History for the Cloth and Metal Pathfinder's Badge
In February 1944 the IX Troop Carrier Command Established a Pathfinder School, in England, to train personnel for the upcoming Normandy Invasion.
A patch design was finalized circa 1944-45 for a cloth patch  but was never authorized by the Army even though it was worn during WWII by Lead AAF Aircrews & Paratroopers.  (note: some AAF Bombardiers trained at the same school also wore the Pathfinder Badges)
The Pathfinder School at Fort Benning was issuing cloth insignia in 1955.
The Department of the Army authorized wearing the badge in 1964.
Metal Pathfinder Badges(in lieu of cloth badges) were authorized for wear on the Army Dress Uniform in October 1968.

Many Thanks to the ASMIC Trading Post author William K. Emerson for the above clarification!

                        A Company (Airborne) 3rd Battalion 5th Infantry

Alpha Company was known as the "Moatengators" regardless of parent Unit: 3/5th, 2/187th, or 1/508th......their mascot was an Alligator(picture below)

Unknow when the pocket patches came into existence; possibly circa late 60's to early 70's
Designer of the Moatengator patch got their inspiration from the 508th (Red Devil) pocket patch

Pocket Patch, (old UI#337), cheesecloth backing, UnUsed.......(sold)

partial History
From 1962-68 the forerunner of the Moatengators was assigned to 3(ABN)/508th/193rd INF BDE.  When the Airborne component of the 3rd Battalion was reduced to a single company the Moatengators were Reflagged as A Company(Airborne), 3rd Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 193rd Infantry Brigade
A Company was stationed at Ft. Kobbe, Panana (next to Howard AFB - Pacific side)

In October 1983, the 1st and 2d Battalions of the 187th Infantry Regiment were Assigned to the 193rd Infantry Brigade in Panama
The 2nd/187th Inf started with one Airborne Company(Alpha) within the Battalion
A Company(Airborne)/2nd BN/187th INF REGT jumped into Honduras along the Nicaragua border for a "show of force" exercise in 1984
2nd/187th became an Airborne Battalion circa 1985
All non-Airborne personnel that wanted to stay with the Battalion went through jump school conducted by 3/7 SFG MMT
Unit was now Designated A Company, 2nd Battalion(Airborne), 187th Infantry Regiment

In 1987 A/2/187th Infantry was ReDesignated A/1(ABN)/508th remaining in Panama
1st and 2d Battalions of the 187th were Inactivated in Panama and Reactivated at Fort Campbell, KY;  1/187th was ReDesignated 5/187th at Ft. Campbell
For Operation Just Cause(invasion to capture Gen. Manuel Noriega) the Moatengators were now Designated A Company, 1st Battalion(Airborne), 508th Infantry Regiment

Squad Leader in A/2nd BN(ABN)/187th Infantry Regiment

UI#186 - Mitchell pattern M65CM Field Jacket, I have seen one other jacket made similar to this one....both looked factory made.
Has the zipper behind the collar but no drop-in Hood, zipper is a #5 with the slide marked "U.S.A.", no other markings on the jacket.
Sage Green(AG-474?) Quarpel liner was fairly common in the late-1960s on issue M65OG FJs.

UI#187 -  KAMO type Camouflage Flyer's/Tanker's/etc. Suit, Conmar Zipper on with "relief" pull on the bottom, U. S. made small snaps, Very High Quality workmanship, no markings on cloth.  Has a collector's tag that read: "Cuban Bay of Pigs Issue", the only picfile I have seen of BOP prisoners-they were weating Spot Camo from the KAMO Company.  A similar heavywieght camo was used in Vietnam, notice the wide epaulets.

UI#248.  Large 6 5/8" patch, "L.R.R.P. U.S. PARATROOPERS", from the fine-gauze backing I would guess it was made in Germany(?).

UI#337 - possible 502nd PIR or 2nd BDE of 101st ABD(AA), a Blue Dragon Paratrooper under a Green Parachute canopy holding an M-16 and Grenade.  Patch was ID'd by it's former owner as "A Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Infantry Division pocket patch".  It could be for the 502nd PIR Battalions that served in Panama but I cannot find any insignia with a Dragon, any ideas of the unit?

UI#353 - ID'd as 1/7th ADA REGT at FT. Bliss in the 1970s (see on RVN - 1975 page, ARTY section

UI#360 - "F I Gung-Ho", a larger version of this patch exists, "F I" is also on a 10th TFS "B" FLT patch, anyone know what "F I" means in Air Force speak?  (Listed in ASMIC Trading Post Oct-Dec 1991 issue, page 50)

Possibly a 18th ABN CORPS patch?
(also on pages: USAF SQs, Ground Forces Airborne)
