Reason for PI made patches
Unit flew one RP/SP-2E to the Philippine Islands every month for "corrosion-control" at a Naval Air Station with a full load of Company personnel or with personnel who helped them in their missions. Many of the 1st RRC's insignia was made in the PI. In 1970, this practice was modified ( by stopping all "non-essential" personnel from going on the monthly flight ) after a Pilot was caught doing a little dealing on his own ( documented in the "Oversexed" Weekly, circa Summer of 1970).

1st ASA Company(AVN), USA made, RFU, Used......inquire
Anyone know:

what aircraft type did they fly, RU-21s or ?
date it was deActivated and assets turned-over to the 138th?
some History for CEFIRM Leader does not agree with the History below?
1st ASA Company(AVN) CEFIRM LEADER was formed in Ft. Bliss, TX, in 1971(1975?) and was intended to replace the RP-2E Neptune, Crazy Cats.
The unit was composed of 9 x aircraft capable of performing Radio Direction Finding(DF), Jamming, & Command and Control via a data link.
Due to problems with one of the systems the unit was not deployed and the war ended.
The system was later turned over to the 138th Aviation (Reserve) Company.
The system was deployed to Central America and subsequently to the Iraq War.

An addition to the 3rd's History from a current member of the staff at Fort Belvoir
(I have changed/rearrange his remarks so any errors are mine)
The 3rd Transportation Company (Helicopter) (later, Light Helicopter) and 509th Transportation Company (Helicopter) were transferred from Ft Bragg, North Carolina in the early-1950s to Commission Davison AAF, Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
The 509th TC(H) had been assigned to the 82nd ABN DIV at Fort Bragg; in the early-1960s the 509th TC stood-down and the assets absorded by the 3rd TC(H).
The 3rd Transportation Company (Helicopter) was Re-designated Operational Support Activity Command (OSACOM) (the "COM" was later dropped from the acronym); OSA continues to operate in the Reserve Command on Davison AAF to this date.
Originally the mission was two-fold: Presidential helicopter support with the Presidential Executive Detachment and Executive Priority Air Transport(PAT).
The Presidential Executive Detachment's mission was transferred to Marine HMX-1 Squadron, circa mid-1970s.
The PAT mission continues at Davison AAF but was divided between the OSA(Reserve Command) flying Fixed Wing Long-Haul missions and the 12th Aviation Battalion(Active Duty) flying Helicopter Support missions.
Both the 3rd & 509th TC's insignia were designed by Walt Disney(not his staff).
Both patches depict the H-21 helicopter that the Companies were flying; Dachshund with twisted ears and rotating tails.
( Anyone have more History on the 3rd )
Does anyone know if the Army ever "Officially" changed the Designator "Transportation" used by Rotary units to "Helicopter"?

* Guidon close-up. See the guy w/guidon spear in front of his face? That's CW2 Al Miller, who ordered all the troop patches. He's wearing a Gun Platoon Patch. I'm the guy, right behind Al - no headgear, blond hair.
* Huey close-up. Several guys in front of Huey are wearing gun platoon patches.
* Cobra close-up. The guy in front of the Cobra is wearing the ACT patch - cav trooper on a sway-backed UH-1B.
=====================================
Somewhere, I have a Trp color 8x10, taken at Biggs AAF in Oct '73. Cobra on one side of bleachers, UH-1H on the other. I will look for it tonight & scan. If we are lucky, we will see some peoples' patches on Nomex. I think (?) (if we are REALLY lucky), there could be two 3" vinyl FUGARI decals on my visor.
Attached, the real deal Aeroscout patch; as well as a real deal Aeroweapons Platoon. I can't find the ACT, 3d ACR troop patch, but I WILL, and then scan. You may have seen the troop patch- it too, was designed by CPT Mike Bright and features a c1876 Cav trooper, riding a sway-backed B Model gunship. The Troop patch came in 2 almost identical versions - the only difference was one cav trooper had a dark blue uniform; and the other a light blue uniform.
BTW - The gun platoon patch was designed by the "at-the-time" gun platoon cdr, CPT Roman Milette.
Some History on the FUGARI patch from a Veteran of the unit, Hank Johnson, author of WINGED SABERS who served from 1973-1975 as the Scout Platoon Leader and Operations Officer.
The FUGARI patch was worn by the Aeroscout Platoon, Air Cavarly Troop(ACT), 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment worn from 1972 to circa-1975.
(This is the Author's FUGARI patch)
When the Regiment arrived at Fort Bliss, there was an attempt to jazz up morale in ACT (which was having some serious "issues").
The Scout Platoon patch was designed by then Platoon Commander, Captain Mike Bright, an OUTSTANDING artist. Only a small number of the Original twill patches were made and only for a short duration. We only had one order made; and by the time we wore them 18 mos, a new Regt CO said - "NO MORE pocket patches - Vietnam is OVER." I have one of the original patches and will send a digpic, if you'd like to see the difference. During those same years, the Gun Plat & Troop HQ wore their own patch designs. Can send you digpix of them as well. Another point - Scout Plat had the patch made into vinyl 18" decals, which were placed on the nose of the OH-58. The Gun Plat also had a vinyl decal made, which was placed on both AH-1G Doghouse doors. Both were beautiful works of art - the detail was far more detailed than the patches.
Oh, yeah...... The BEST part - FUGARI was for.... "WHERE THE FUCK ARE WE?" When the Troop first arrived at Bliss (and went to NOE flt), the platoon pilots & observers were quite often "mis-oriented" in the wastelands of WSMR.

partial History
Operated from 1966 - 1973 at Vung Tau
served under various commands: Capital Avn Bn, 223rd CAB, 201st CAC, & 17th CAG
then it operated directly under command of the First Aviation Brigade
Det 5 was a training Unit broken into four teams: Huey, Cobra, Kiowa, and Loach.
Mission of the teams was to train Instructor Pilots, Standardization Instructor Pilots, and to give Transition Training to pilots who were changing aircraft. I think it was unique in Vietnam.

partial History - from a former Army Air Traffic Controller
( I have re-arranged/changed some of his verbage - any mistakes will be mine )
The 7th Army Training Center was originally Established as the Armor Training Center(ATC) for the 7th Army and gradually took over all sorts of training missions, but it never had anything to do with air traffic control.
The 7th ATC was originally stationed in the Vilseck-Grafenwoehr area. I have no idea where the aviation section was specifically located but I suspect it was at Echterdingen/Stuttgart because that's where the "7th Army Avn Tng Center" (a sub-unit of the 7th ATC) was located. The 7th ATC had a number of helicopter firing/training ranges in various parts of Germany.
The Army's Air Traffic Control Unit in Germany was Originally Designated the 16th Aviation Operating Detachment
later Redesignated 14th AATRI Company (Army Air Traffic Regulation & Identification Company)
then Redesignated 14th Aviation Company (ATC)
later Redesignated 14th Aviation Unit (ATC)
then Redesignated 59th ATC Battalion
and finally Redesignated 3rd Battalion, 58th Aviation Regiment
In the early-to-mid '60s the Army's Air Traffic Controllers were trained by the USAF at Keesler AFB in Mississippi.
In the late '60s Air Traffic Controller training for Army personnel was centralized at the Army Aviation Center, Ft. Rucker, Alabama, where it has remained to this day.
There was never any formal centralized Army air taffic control training unit in Germany.
